MBSSE Commissions Kenema Education Project

The Senior Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) David Banya has turned the sod for the construction of a Model Science School for girls, in Combema, on the outskirts of Kenema City. The sod turning ceremony signified the official commissioning of the project titled, “The Improvement of Educational Infrastructure and Quality Educational Services in Kenema District – Kenema Education Project”.

MBSSE collaborates with SEND Sierra Leone, an international Non-Governmental Organisation to implement the project with funds from TERRA TECH through the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

The Project comprises of three intended outputs: the construction of a model science school for girls, the provision of ICT Training for teachers, and the capacitation of MBSSE Office in Kenema District.

Speaking at the Sod Turning ceremony, the Country Director of SEND Sierra Leone, Joseph Ayamga said his organisation is making contributions to the improvement of quality education for pupils, especially girls in Kenema District. He further said that the Science School for girls will have a 100% boarding homes for pupils of the school. He said this will help to keep school girls safe and focused on their school work.

The National FQSE Coordinator, Amara Sowa said the Kenema Education Project is in line with the vision of the President, His Excellency, Brig. Julius Maada Bio, whom he said is principally desirous to seeing Sierra Leonean children having equitable access to quality education. He said the ongoing establishment of a Science school for girls will encourage female pupils to offer science courses and further address the current shortage of STEM teachers in the country’s educational sector.
